FRESH JUICE: SZA – SUPERMODEL

By June 12, 2017 No Comments

Man i’ve been eagerly, some would say impatiently, waiting for this album to drop. Last Friday as I’m sure many of you know, Solana Imani Rowe aka SZA dropped her debut album titled Ctrl. I’m sure many of you tech savvy juice heads already automatically registered the album title as control which, ipso facto is the the concept SZA explores in her songs both lyrically and in little snippets of conversation she has with her mum which you can hear throughout the album. Now, For those of you who are not all that familiar with her work, today’s Fresh Juice will give you some insight into what kind of skills this St Louis songstress’ posses as an artist. Having teamed up with some pretty low key artists in the past like Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper and a little more recently Travis Scott today’s featured track, Supermodel, is SZA by herself and is a pretty dope opening track.

Supermodel is introspective, mischievous and has a really mellow stripped back soundscape allowing SZA the perfect platform to tell us what’s on her mind. The track predominately focuses on SZA confronting her emotions; addressing commonly asked/relatable relationship questions and gives an honest uncensored taste of how she deals with infidelity and betrayal. Always known for being a dope lyricist, Supermodel shows off her unique rapping ability and is a pretty good indication as to why there has been so much hype surround SZA. Just when you think the track will maintain it’s composure till closure, a jazzy little drum beat kicks in towards the tail end of the song, providing some extra flavour to the understated distorted riff that’s chilling in the background. From what i’ve read about the album, certain tracks are live instrumentation which is dope and would translate really nicely live. Not sure if Supermodel is live instrumentation as Pharrell and Stix pop up in the production credits for Supermodel but i have no doubt that a band could simulate the studio sonics into a live performance. Not entirely sure the queen would be spinning this one on her birthday but you most certainly should certainly find the time in the remaining hours of your day off to give the rest of Ctrl a listen as its laced with other goodies like this one.
