We are beyond thrilled with proceedings from the 2016 ARIA awards, which saw Mansfield’s Violent Soho take home the awards for Best Rock Album for WACO along with Best Group. It comes close to rounding out a massive year for the band who have completed two headline tours of Australia along with a slew of massive festival headline slots. We’d like to send a huge congratulations to the band from the I OH YOU family, and to say a big thank you to everyone who has come to a show, bought a record and supported the band along this journey. Keep fighting the good fight! Catch the guys at Falls Festival over summer.
Our boy Jackson Phillips AKA Day Wave has just released a brilliant, brand new tune called ‘Wasting Time’, an aptly titled song that is a continuation of his most recent EP Hard To Read. A true hazy, wistful guitar-pop tune that may or may not have conjured the sunshine. Dive in below!
I OH YOU management signing Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are back brand new single ‘Julie’s Place’, accompanied by the news of their signing with Sub Pop (ex AU/NZ)! The band are joining the famed record label who’s roster boasts the likes of Sleater Kinney, Beach House & Father John Misty to name a few. The band’s latest single Julie’s Place’ is packed with the driving rhythms that trademarked the songs on Talk Tight. A mash of sprinting guitars mimic singer Fran Keaney’s pangs of heartache, his awkwardly sensual lyrics calling to mind the chaotic confusion of being around someone you can’t get off your mind. Plenty more to come real soon!
Jack River has today revealed the hazy visuals to ‘Palo Alto’, the lead single taken from her debut EP Highway Songs No. 2 (out now via I Oh You). The beautiful yet gritty video for ‘Palo Alto’ which premiered overnight via DIY, was shot in the back of a 1985 Ford Bronco and directed by Holly Rankin (aka Jack River) and friends in and around L.A.
Rankin explains its concept: “From the minute the song began to come together, in my mind I saw hazed out afternoon light and everyday suburbia out the window. That golden feeling of looking back through hazed summer light on something you can’t let go of yet.”
The footage that bends around the in-car shots came from different places and times – similar to how Rankin made the song. “We bought a late ’90s DV cam, and some old footage of someone’s holiday was still on there, it felt the perfect distant memory so we added it in,” she begins. “Some of the footage was shot in my hometown, this little coastal town four hours from Sydney – my friends and I decked out an old drive through with disco lights and filmed it.”
Jack River recently announced a string of shows, her first headline performances following her much hyped debut at this year’s I OH YOU BIGSOUND annual after party, to a capacity room full of fans and tastemakers alike. Today, we are incredibly excited to share ‘Palo Alto’, the brilliant new single from the newest member of the I OH YOU family, Jack River. The track is the second to be released from her forthcoming EP Highway Songs No.2 which is set to be unleashed on the world next Friday (October 7).
Jack River is the alias of Holly Rankin who hails from Forster on the NSW Mid North Coast. Receiving its world premiere via Linda Marigliano on triple j ‘Palo Alto’ further reinforces the immense talent that is Jack River. Rankin describes how the song came to life:
“I wrote and recorded Palo Alto through so many times in my life that the song became a kind of folder for memories and sentiments over a long stretch of time. I started writing it in my hometown, then continued it in Sydney (my friend lived in a building called Palo Alto), and then wrote the rest in different trips to the studio.”
“It was always destined to be sun-drenched and gritty and gilded in synths and electric guitars – I wanted to find the line between the 90’s, early 2000’s and now, and blend all my dreams of a highway song into one. The moment this song came together, production-wise, it felt like the beginning of Jack River. It’s about letting go but not giving up, melancholic-but-sure endings, and people realising magic when it’s too late – even though you knew it all along.”

Fresh off the back of performing two electric sets at BIGSOUND 2016, today we are psyched to present you with ‘Pollyanna’, the infectious new single from Bundaberg’s DZ Deathrays which premiered overnight on triple j. Along with this new earworm, we’re real hyped to announce that the thrash party duo will be heading out on tour in December for their biggest headline shows to date playing a combination of all ages, under 18 and 18+ shows across the country.
Although 2016 was technically supposed to be “a year off to write the new record” for DZ Deathrays, Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley have somehow managed to fit in an insane amount. The duo released their ferocious single ‘Blood On My Leather’, supported Violent Soho on a huge national tour, played Groovin The Moo festival and managed to squeeze in two tours through North America. They’ll see 2016 out touring through the UK, Europe and North America on a co-headline tour with buddies Dune Rats.
As they continue to perfect their third studio album under the helm of producer and friend Burke Reid (of Gerling), we are gifted with ‘Pollyanna’ to tide us over. Featuring all the things that fans and critics have come to love about the two friends’ music, ‘Pollyanna’ sees DZ Deathrays continue their musical exploration as they develop their sound which ultimately has produced a hugely contagious track that will have you bouncing off the walls.
Having been a favourite of the Australian touring circuit for sometime now, these gigs will see the two lads from Bundy turn things up to 11 and with all age groups covered no one has to miss out! Along for the ride to warm up the crowd on all shows will be the insanely cool Ecca Vandal, who is running hot after impressing at this year’s BIGSOUND where she also joined DZ onstage to cover Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’. Opening proceedings at each show will be local acts WoodBoot in Brisbane, Sox in Perth, Rackett in Sydney and Heads of Charm for Melbourne and Adelaide.

Ya boys Violent Soho are stateside at the moment taking WACO and a whole bunch of the older cuts to the masses. Just because you’re stuck back in AUS doesn’t mean you miss out on all the fun though, the band dropped by SideOneDummy to play a live set and included a cover of ‘The Prick’ by Dogs On Acid. An absolute pearler in its own right, the band deliver a menacing take on the song with their own unique spin. Come to think of it – if you haven’t checked the Dogs On Acid record yet, go hit it up as well.

Fresh from absolutely smashing our annual I OH YOU BIGSOUND party to pieces in the wee hours of last Thursday morning, Jack River has been announced on Dope Lemon’s Honey Bones Tour and will be doing a lap of the country this October and November. These shows will be a chance for fans to catch Jack previewing songs from her debut EP Highway Songs No. 2, which is set for release on October 7th via I OH YOU. Tickets are on sale now and moving quickly!
Today it is with great excitement that we announce the news that Jack River will be releasing her debut EP Highway Songs No.2 on the 7th of October through I OH YOU.
Having released the instantly infectious single ‘Talk Like That’ (the first single from Highway Songs No.2) in early July, Jack River’s (AKA Holly Rankin) unique brand of pop music and relatable lyricism has seemingly caught the attention of many critics and newfound fans around the country. This response has seen ‘Talk Like That’ reach the top 20 most played charts on triple j, strong support from community radio and amassed an impressive 245,000+ streams across all digital platforms.
With ‘Talk Like That’ showing no signs of slowing down in the near future, today we’re happy to reveal Jack River’s cover of Cigarettes After Sex’s cult classic ‘Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby’, which sees Rankin strip things back in a DIY home recording from her share house; presented with a video that was directed, shot and edited by Rankin while she was recently in the US.
The cover, alongside ‘Talk Like That’ and three new original tracks will form Jack River’s debut EP Highway Songs No.2, which will drop on the 7th of October and is available for pre-order now HERE.
Our boy MOSSY today shared a lyric video for ‘Waterfall’, directed by the wonderful Ben Timony. One of our favourite EP cuts, Waterfall is a brilliant example of the woozy, electronic tinged pop music for which he is fast becoming known for. Dive in!
