Today we feature the latest single from New York’s Perfume Genius. ‘Queen’ marks the lead track from LP number 3 which is titled Too Bright and has been met with very well deserved widespread acclaim over the last few days. There’s elements of glistening pop and drab, grey tones hitting you all at once with this one whilst Mike Hadreas (the man behind the project) serenades with mesmerising, visceral vocals. It’s quite a step since his previous release Back N 2 It, which for the most part defied traditional pop structure and dealt primarily with soundscapes and extended jams. We’re sold. Upon the release of the single, Hadreas himself explained a fascinating undercurrent to the forthcoming record:
“I’ve seen faces of blank terror when I walk by. Sometimes from seemingly strong, macho dudes — somehow my presence confuses and ultimately scares them. There is a strange power to it that I’ve only recently begun to understand and embrace. After many years trying to sort out exactly what they are scared of, most of the time converting the result into personal shame, there are now moments of monstrous pride.”
