LISTEN: The Drums – Magic Mountain

Everyone loves a good comeback. Today, it’s everybody’s favourite Brooklyn duo (well, at least one of) The Drums’ turn with their first single in 3 years, titled ‘Magic Mountain’. As a follow up to their last studio album, Portamento, there was always going to be a level of expectation which followed as both Jonny Pierce and Jacbob Graham peeled off to pursue equally enthralling yet disparately styled solo projects. At it’s heart, Magic Mountain is indeed a return to spectacular form but with a little more roughness around the edges. The song at times produces a sense of unease, fuzzed out guitars and shrill synthesizers form the basis of this surging track whilst Pierce’s vocals keep things at bay before an incredible instrumental interlude builds even more tension. This is a track which will undoubtedly divide long time fans, but we think this is The Drums continuing to evolve and doing just what they do, which will always keep us coming back.
