FRESH JUICE: TORO Y MOI – GIRL LIKE YOU

If you like subdued synths, warped bass lines, tape hiss and hazy beat loops, this latest version of Toro y Moi is for you. A modern day sonic explorer, Chaz Bear (fka Bundick) has spent the last few years building himself around psychedelic experimentation, but if the first cut from his forthcoming LP is anything to go by – we’re once again swaying into new territory. Almost treading on his first foray into electronica, ‘Girl Like You’ is somehow rolling through new terrain – Chaz stated he was wanting leave more space within his music, and it’s on display here. His songwriting is romantic and yearning, and the delivery feels melancholic. The protagonist of this story may feel lonely, but they’re definitely not moving far from their apartment to find the girl for them. The mood is sultry, the soundscape full and warm, and the groove is deep. There is so many delicate elements flowing in between each other, yet the composition is vast. Chaz isn’t letting himself go too far on this one, and this restraint is creating some beautifully danceable grooves.

I dare you to watch the clip and not fall in love with Chaz. God, there are so many soft lights.
