Empress Of has released a couple of quick fire tracks over this past week, beginning with her churning Darkstar collaboration ‘Reformer’ and more recently with the anthemic ‘Woman Is a Word’ – a track that didn’t quite make her debut album Me, but still deserved its time in the sun, according to Lorely Rodriguez. Dreamy synths and punchy percussion usher in the opening notes of the single, with Rodriguez taking aim at the social norms surrounding gender perception and assumed roles with stunning ease and wit. Speaking of the track, Rodriguez mentioned in a statement, “I wrote it as a reaction to feeling like the word “woman” put me in a box of things I was capable to do”. A brilliant outtake from one of last years standout releases!
