FROTH OF THE DAY: VOLCANO CHOIR – BYEGONE

For the uninitiated, Volcano Choir is the collaboration between Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and the complete 2005 line up from Collections of Colonies of Bees. This is the first release we’ve heard from the band since their widely lauded debut LP ‘Unmap’ which was released back in 2009, four years after the first songs were penned. Today’s featured single ‘Byegone’ has an almost cinematic feel as it layers deep and soulful guitars with emphatic percussion and keys as it undulates to the point of elation. In the context of Bon Iver, we think this track continues on the tangent from many of the noticeable facets of 2008’s ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ in a much denser sounding context. It’s often hard to achieve a sound so raw and emphatic without it sounding over-produced or even forced, but that’s exactly what Volcano Choir have managed done with Byegone as it retains a polished late 80’s/early 90’s aesthetic. The second LP from the band was made available today for streaming below via NPR. If this isn’t the perfect soundtrack to a winter Monday then we don’t know what is.
