Fan Girl are a ‘relatively’ (a year or two old now) new Melbourne based six-piece. I feel like I’ve been watching these guys with serious interest from the sidelines for a while now. In fact, I’ve wanted to cover them on the ol’ I OH YOU blog for a while now too. And while that seems pretty normal for a guy involved in the local music community, I almost feel like I shouldn’t like Fan Girl. Maybe it’s because they kinda sound like what a ‘rock’ band sounds like? Or maybe it’s because when they’ve played alongside bands like The Vines, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Birds of Tokyo, I’ve felt odd as I really don’t like those bands? But to honest, I really, really like these guys. Of course, there’s much more in a track like ‘Small Town’ than a typical ‘rock’ sound, it takes elements from psych and garage for sure – and showcases a refined approach to thrashing around. For a track that is full to the brim, the layering and arrangement is so slick. You never feel like you’re being overpowered and it ensures that the frenetic pace and high energy doesn’t get lost in the mix… Oh shit, I think I’m into a ‘rock’ band. Am I becoming my dad?
Fan Girl’s debut LP, Elephant Room, is out March 23 via Caroline Australia.
