I don’t know if I ever thought I’d be writing about a new Christmas release ever, let alone on fuckin December 6. But, I guess sometimes miracles do happen. You may know Sam Eastgate as Sam Dust, or as the lead singer of late-2000s dance-punk idols Late of the Pier, or as his solo moniker LA Priest, or even as Soft Hair (alongside Connan Mockasin). But what you might not know is that he “leads an exciting double life. When he hears the sound of sleigh bells, an amazing transformation occurs. Sam becomes LA Wise Man. His mind becomes a source of ancient and powerful wisdom. And he also writes christmas songs” (took that from his PR). Turns out, that ‘All I Want For Christmas Is Rock & Roll’ is actually bloody fun. A shambolic, fuzzy track that reminds me a little bit of the harder hitting psych tracks from Late of the Pier, but with dumb Christmas lyrics. This is the kind of disjointed garage sound I live for, and I can always use an extra banging track to throw on during family lunch on the 25th. Add this to your Xmas playlist and freak out your hick Uncle that came down from ‘the country’.
I honestly don’t know whether or not to expect more LA Wise Man tracks, but ‘All I Want For Christmas Is Rock & Roll’ is out now via Domino Recording Co.
