Los Angeles producer Jason Chung AKA Nosaj Thing brings us our feature this evening with ‘Cold Stares’, featuring Chicago rap phenomenon Chance The Rapper. Slated as the first single from the producer’s forthcoming third LP Faded, set for release on the enigmatic Innovative Leisure label, Cold Stares could be labelled as a progressive regression from the earlier sounds we heard on Drift, a frenetic LP that was born from the now legendary Low End Theory club night and sub-culture which surrounded it in Los Angeles. The interplay between Chance and The O’My’s elevates the single and provides a rich sense of colour, even if just for a brief moment, as swirling tones and bubbling percussion harks back to the earlier sounds of Mount Kimbie on a heavy trip. This is a release which is advanced in its simplicity; Cold Stares finds solitude in repetition and an eerie use of space and texture.
Fated is set for release on May 5th via Innovative Leisure.
