Okay, I admit it – I’m late to the party on this one. To be fair, I’ve been hearing 박혜진 Park Hye Jin, namely ‘I DON’T CARE’, a heck of a lot around the traps. But I’ve just recently dived head-first into IF U WANT IT, the Korean producer’s debut EP, which dropped mid-December. Only then did the beautiful ‘CALL ME’ slither its precious soul into my awaiting earholes.
The closing track of the EP isn’t representative of Hye Jin’s other material whatsoever. Instead, the Melbourne-via-Seoul artist takes the slow approach, cutting out the explosive bass-lines in place of Metro Boomin-like cicada percussion. Rather than the house-y keys, Hye Jin drops in a tender lo-fi piano riff – the highlight of the track. Everything about the song is minimal, but the effect is striking. I can’t help but imagine Hye Jin dropping ‘CALL ME’ into a DJ mix after a set of froffers. Personally, I’d be 100% about it. Just get the ‘Wet Floor’ sign out, ‘coz there’ll be many tears on the d-floor.
Sidenote: Yaeji and Peggy Gou paved the way, and now Park Hye Jin can be added to that list of exciting house/techno creators out of South Korea. There’s something in the water over there.
