FRESH JUICE: BILLY DAVIS (FT. DENZEL CURRY)

Billy Davis’ new track, Goldfish ought to shed a little light on your mundane Monday. Based out of Melbourne, Davis has developed a reputation as an enigmatic live act with a band that can grow to eleven strong on stage. Fronted by a fella who is known to his parents as Will Rimington, this virtuoso has a rather illustrious resume. Having played keys live and in session with Kimbra and Benny Walker, Rimington’s latest collaboration sees him team up Florida rapper Denzel Curry to create a real groovy number in Goldfish. The two linked up when Curry overheard Rimington playing the song on piano whilst the Melburnian was on tour with Kimbra, Cuzza was intrigued and the rest, as they say, is history.

Finding a funky blend of contemporary RnB and neo soul, Goldfish is a groovy sensual song that’s message is simple: have faith in yourself. A disco-like guitar riff, a simple drum loop, and a wobbly, potent mono synth melody make up the main backing track for today’s juice and provide the perfect platform for the female vocalist to flaunt her skills. “If you judge me that’ll me my spinach, I’ll go Popeye”? Brilliant! Curry graces the beat with his high pitched rapid fire vocals that make up the bridge, adding flavour to an already tasty song. Today’s Juice will appear on Billy Davis’ forthcoming debut LP, A Family Portrait that drops September 1 so stay frosty.
