Zzzzzz… Hey! Sorry, that’s just the sound of me sleeping on First Beige. The slinky sextet outta Brisbane have been serving up groovy disco-laced indie rock gear since 2016. That description doesn’t really do their music justice, but hopefully you’re picking up what I’m putting down – they sound fresh and fun. The fellas have recently dropped a split single featuring ‘Vivid’ and ‘Images’. The former has been gaining a bit of clout around the traps, though it’s the latter that wormed its way into my ears.
In comparison to the funky and upbeat ‘Vivid’, ‘Images’ offers a slither of melancholy, particularly represented through vocalist David Versace’s yearning delivery. “I see your outside image, but what’s your inside image?” He ponders. After the first verse, the jazzy instrumentation steers this ship into a surprising direction. The combination of soulful keyboard riffs, a rhythmic string section and jittery percussion are straight from the Harvey Sutherland textbook of hit-making. Also, there’s a fucking flute. Need I say more?
First Beige have recently been lighting up Australian cities in support of the split single release, and from all reports, have absolutely smashed it for six. Their next gig is Jungle Love Festival on the Sunshine Coast from 29th-31st November, so if you’re in the area, you’d be silly not to check them out.
