I must say it’s a little difficult to believe New York rapper, Wiki is only be 23 years old. The man is a wordsmith with an endless stream of wisdom that bleeds out of every new track he drops. As the Fresh Juice was formally known as the Froth of The Day, seasoned Frothers/ Juice heads will know that we’re big fans of Wiki and if it’s your first time hearing this NY MC then you’ll understand why. Hip Hop fans know that there is an obscene amount of copycat rap out there. Of course it’s only natural for artists to follow the lead of rappers they admire or aspire to be, but attempts at mimicking someone else’s flow, image or general style causes a once unique sub genre to become over saturated with second rate replicas resulting in the critics cry of “it all sounds the same.” Now, of course this issue is by no means unique to Hip Hop and of course true fans of any genre can detect copycats a mile off but when an artist doesn’t buckle to external pressures and doesn’t compromise their artistic integrity for a quick buck, it’s worth a shout out.
Pretty Bull begins with an unsteady beat that quivers on a loop for majority of the track. Upon this wobbly foundation Wiki rather quickly textures the beat with his vocals that instantly remind you of how unique his flow is. The beat, littered with what sounds like a few muffled keyboard notes, is perfect for Wiki to navigate his prolonged bars through. The heavy bass you can hear in the background acts like an (irregular) heartbeat and maintains a nice and steady head bobbing pace (if your heart beats like the base you should get that checked out). The video is also worth a mention too. Partying in what looks like a bodega or one of those NY Deli’s that sell booze 24/7, Wiki and his crew throw a rager inside the shop he works at; smoking blunts and helping themselves to the stock fridge. With snippets of the Wiki flag (a mesh of the Puerto Rican and Irish flag) on both the apron he cleans in and a wall he raps in front of, Pretty Bull is a pretty dope audio visual. Similarly to the last Wiki track we frothed on, Icarus, it is unclear whether these two tracks will combine to feature on a forthcoming album but this should do for now.
