Yesterday was one of those days where the endless and mind numbing trawl of Soundcloud wasn’t in vain. After finding Basenji’s ‘Tribute To The Cat’, I knew it was time to stop searching and start finding out where it came from. This Sydney based producer who has previously worked alongside Wave Racer on another project, ‘Pablo J & The Lobsterettes’, is among an emerging number of artists who are currently pushing Australia’s dance music onto a more imaginative and energetic plane. ‘Tribute To The Cat’ takes cues from Sinjin Hawke, Cashmere Cat (hence the name, duh!) and the classic production styling of French house. The track is an energetic piece which ties in a unique combination of frenetic synth elements which are punctuated by crisp percussive lines and vocal samplings. The track holds a unique feel due to the playfulness of the pop sounds used, paired with a technical sensibility which clearly lies behind the structure and the execution. We can’t wait to hear more.
